Postmodernism and Modernism

Postmodernism describes movements which both arise from, and react against or reject, trends in modernism. It is suggested that the shift in art from Modernism to PostModernism occurred in Europe in 1914 and in America in 1968. There are many critics of the use of the term 'postmodernim', one example is Jean Baudrillard who is considered to be one of the pioneers of postmodern art. Yet he in his view Postmodern art was inferior to that created before World War 2.

In recent years it is possible to say that the term's meaning has somewhat altered with the rise of globalisation and new forms of media, expanding the boundaries to new levels. A good example of this would be Banksy's grafitti art on the wall of palestine. Through these works he is addresses bleak problems, forcing the viewer to address the broader picture in an incredibly black and white perspective, which is a key factor in making him a contributor to the postmodernism movement.
